Dental Care Facts to Chew On
Dogs and cats don't get cavities often but can happen in both. More common is periodontal disease and inflammatoin of the gums. Both can lead to tooth loss, infection and organ damage (e.g. heart damage from oral bacteria in the blood).
Up to 70% of cats and 80% of dogs that don't receive their early dental care can develop dental disease by the age of three.
Older pets or ill pets may need dental cleanings more than once a year. Smaller dogs are more prone to dental disease. Dental problems can cause loss of appetite and weight loss.
