Periodontal disease is the most prominent-and least treated-disease in veterinary practices. Preventing periodontal disease and treating it, is important to the pet's overall health and may also affect the lengh and quality of life. Periodontal health can be maintained through combinations of professional therapy and home care.
Periodontal disease is just that. A disease. A bacterial disorder that loosens the teeth and destroys tissue and bone. It does not stay in the mouth. Disease conditons elsewhere in the body become more of a problem when the animal is left untreated. It also can lead to systemic infection.
The signs of periodontal disease can occur so gradually that owners don't notice or attribute them to old age. If this were us we would run right to the dentist's office. These poor cats and dogs are suffering because they don' t have a choice. We have to help our clients understand.
If you have any questions about your pet's dental health, call our office for a free dental exam.
